Perception and Need for Father Involvement in Childrearing: Developing a Program for Vitalizing Father Involvement in Childrearing

Abstract
This study aims to develop a program that encourages fathers to participate in childrearing, and to investigate perceptions and demands of fathers for the program using quantitative and qualitative research methods. For quantitative research, questionnaires distributed to 53 fathers of infants and preschool children and 50 fathers of school-aged children were analyzed, and for qualitative research, group interviews were performed for five fathers each from both groups. The results showed that most fathers had difficulty in childrearing and tended to solve these difficulties with dependence on both party¡¯s parents, institutes, and internet use. Hence, fathers recognized that a program to activate child-rearing and fathers of infants and preschool children wanted a program constructed that included parental roles to quickly respond to their children¡¯s developmental characteristics, play methods, and healthy affection formation. Father of school-aged children wanted a program constructed that included the correct communication method and discipline with their children, and the prevention and improvement of their children¡¯s problematic behaviors. As for the program method, fathers in both groups expressed their desire for the program to be held for 1 to 2 hours per week in the form of lectures and symposiums by professional instructors.
